From The Desk of Executive Councilor John A. Stephen
District 4
Dear Friends,
Here’s a quick look at what I’ve been up to this February as your Executive Councilor—working on community projects, meeting with constituents, including Town representatives, hosting my second Roundtable – this one involving Highway Safety – and more to keep New Hampshire thriving.
Boosting Road Safety in Candia: After meeting with the Candia Board of Selectmen about traffic concerns at NH Route 43 and Old Candia Road, I collaborated with the Department of Transportation. They’re now set to install larger, illuminated stop signs and a solar-powered flashing beacon to prevent accidents—thanks to Commissioner William Cass and Administrator William Lambert for their quick action.
Learning about the important Derry/Londonderry I-93 Exit 4A Project: I got an in-depth update on this vital infrastructure project, which will ease traffic congestion and spur growth with a new interchange, connector road, and bridge upgrades. It’s a big step forward for the region and our state’s future.
Town of Strafford School District Kenneth Hill Pond Dam Decommissioning project: I attended a meeting with the Town of Strafford School District Superintendent Robert Seaward and the District’s engineer regarding the decommissioning of the Kenneth Hill Pond Dam and a grant that the District has applied for in the amount of $467,764, through the Aquatic Resource Mitigation (ARM) Fund Program to help the Town in this important effort. The project is a prime example of the type of project the ARM Fund Program strives to fund and will restore similar functions and values to what was lost in the Salmon Falls-Piscataqua River Service Area by the permitted impacts that generated the funds. I will work diligently to ensure the School Districts plan to remediate the risk but also to develop a conservation trail for children and families in the community is expeditiously advanced.
Hosting a Highway Safety Roundtable: On February 26, I brought together over 80 law enforcement officers, policymakers, and leaders—including all my Council colleagues, the Speaker of the House, Senate President and Attorney General—to tackle rising highway fatalities and reckless driving. We’re working with Department of Safety Commissioner Robert Quinn and his staff on solutions to make our roads safer, with more to come soon.
